There was this restaurant on W. 72nd where you could pick up made-to-order pita sandwiches and garnish them with extra goodies from a self-service condiments bar. I always went for the little slices of preserved lemon first. Lemons preserved with salt are mellow yet deeper in flavor—no bitter pith, just the harmony of rind and flesh. These macarons are an ode to that taste memory. I was too impatient to make my own preserved lemons and instead used @doriegreenspan wonderful Lemon Goop recipe on @nytcooking as an approximation. A wee bit salty and unapologetically lemony, these cookies turned out just as I hoped!Recipe coming to blog soon.

Can I admit that, for a prolific baker, I make very few pies? It’s not that I don’t like them, in fact, I really enjoy good pie. I’m straight up intimidated of pie crust. That’s all. When ordering out, I’m routinely disappointed by soggy, under-baked crusts. At home, my brief forays into pie territory have yielded tough, chewy situations that I would be embarrassed to serve my own Mama. #overworkeddough

So I’m setting this as one of my #fallgoals: Study some pie theory ( #thepiebible #thebookonpie ) and take my time making at least 5 pies. Because you can’t truly enjoy the season without good pie. 🥧

Want a thicker cookie? Add more flour. A thinner cookie with crispy edges? Add more butter. A more flavorful cookie? Brown your butter, toast your oatmeal, and get a little creative with your spices!⁠

Cooking the butter and oatmeal in a skillet until both are brown and fragrant adds caramel-y depth and nuttiness. Warming garam masala adds both sweet and savory notes and a heaping teaspoon of kosher salt highlights the buttery richness of the dough. I tend to favor more butter and less flour for a cookie that's thin and chewy, with that oh-so-crunchy edge.⁠

1 1/2 oz gin ⁠
1 oz lemon juice⁠
1 oz raspberry puree, strained of seeds⁠
1/2 oz agave syrup or simple syrup⁠
1 oz pasteurized egg white⁠
3 raspberries or a lemon peel for garnish⁠

Measure everything into a cocktail shaker. Do a 30 second dry shake (no ice). Fill shaker with ice, do another 30 second shake. Strain into a coupe or whatever lovely glass you have on hand. Be sure to spoon out that beautiful foam! Garnish with a skewer of raspberries or an artful twist of lemon and enjoy!⁠

🍨 Because this speedy summer is coming to a close and we're not ready. So dust off the old ice cream maker, gather some grapefruit, limes, agave, and your fave tequila and throw together this refreshing cocktail sorbet!⁠

⁠
2 1/4 cups strained grapefruit juice (4-5 large grapefruit - I like ruby red for the color)⁠
1/2 cup strained lime juice (6-8 limes)⁠
2 tsp finely grated lime zest⁠
1 cup agave syrup⁠
1/3 cup blanco tequila, such as Espolòn⁠
⁠
Mix everything together. Chill mixture in refrigerator until very cold, about 3 hours, then strain and run through ice cream maker. Freeze for at least 4 hours before serving. Enjoy!⁠

One Day Sundae Cake! Perfect for your Labor Day weekend cook-out! Scratch made cake or cake mix both work great for this one: ⁠

1. Bake the cake in a 9" bundt or 9" x 2" cake pan.⁠
2. Slice off the top of the bundt to create a flat surface for the ice cream. If you use a regular cake pan, just level it, if needed.⁠
3. Take a half gallon of your favorite ice cream and, working quickly, use an ice cream scooper to pile the ice cream all over the surface of the cake. Firmly press the scoops into each other, don't be afraid to use some 💪.⁠
4. Place the cake in the freezer for at least 2 hours. ⁠
5. When ready to serve, drizzle the cake with your favorite ice cream sauces (homemade fudge sauce and butterscotch sauce pictured), whipped cream, sprinkles, nuts, cherries, etc., and enjoy!

One of those serendipitous moments when we already had all the things to make the crumble + a bunch of white and yellow nectarines to use or lose!⁠

This recipe calls for just 1/2 cup brown sugar and takes 20 minutes to throw together. It’s so gratifying to make something so yummy with such little effort, right?

(Also, keeping this crisp on the less sweet side makes it an excellent breakfast!)

Filling:⁠
5 cups nectarines, bite-size pieces (or peaches)⁠
1 Tbsp corn starch⁠
1/4 cup brown sugar⁠
1/4 tsp salt⁠
1/2 tsp garam masala (or spice of your choice)⁠
⁠
Crumble:⁠
1/4 cup brown sugar⁠
1/3 cup almond flour⁠
1/2 cup slivered or sliced almonds⁠
1/2 tsp salt⁠
1/2 tsp garam masala (or spice of your choice)⁠
1/3 cup unsalted butter, straight from fridge⁠
⁠
Preheat oven to 350 F and adjust rack to sit in center. ⁠
⁠
Mix filling together and spread in an 8 x 8 glass or metal baking dish. (An 8" or 9" cake pan or skillet would also be fine.)⁠
⁠
For the crumble, mix together all the ingredients except the butter. Cut the butter into small pieces and use hands to rub the butter into the mixture until the crumble is coarse and crumbly. Pat the crumble evenly over the nectarines. ⁠
⁠
Bake for 35-45 minutes, until well-browned and bubbly. Serve warm with scoops of vanilla ice cream. ⁠
